Heroes of the Ghost War
This project sheds light on the brave medical teams combating COVID-19 pandemic round the clock. It documents the constant work by medical personnel in a fight that is beyond the ability, capacity or expertise of any one individual. It also explores the battle of brave patients who fought and won against the pandemic.
I spent 7 months inside Addis Ababa’s COVID facility documenting their daily life, focusing on trying to find the special moments that could tell the emotions and stories of this extraordinary period.
Ethiopia’s first COVID-19 case was reported in Addis Ababa in March 2020, a Japanese man who had just arrived in the largely unprepared city. The rate of cases soon spiked, helped in part by the dire economic situation of most residents, which led them to focus more on earning their daily income rather than following the measures put in place to slow the spread of COVID-19. This has ultimately led to more hospitals being forced to turn their spaces into COVID treatment facilities.
