The Batwa Of Bundibugyo
Kabona Jokas, spokesperson for the Batwa Pygmies of Bundibugyo, sits for his portrait in Semuliki National Park. The Batwa Pygmies were hunter-gatherers and lived entirely off the forests in the west of Uganda. In 1993, the forests were incorporated into Semuliki National Park, and the pygmies were evicted with no compensation, triggering alcoholism and inter-racial sexual activities amongst their community which resulted in the rapid spread of HIV.
