The Social Assistance Grant for Empowerment (SAGE), is a Uganda government scheme where citizens aged 65 years and above are paid a monthly stipend of 25,000 UGX. The 500billon shilling scheme, co-funded by the Irish Government, covers more than 40 districts in Uganda. Due to its peculiar socio-economic attributes, including a poverty rate of 74.4% as well as frequent drought and famine, the Karamoja sub-region, comprising seven districts in north-eastern Uganda, has been given special consideration in the scheme. In the sub-region all citizens aged 60 years and above can access the scheme and all districts have been enrolled on SAGE. This story navigates the various forms of transport that the elderly in Napak and Moroto use to access their money, as well as the process of claiming the stipend.
