Political Violence
The 2016 campaigns in Uganda were characterised by many events of violence, with several instances of conflict between security forces and opposition candidates and supporters. On 15th February 2016 Kizza Besigye (FDC) was on his way to a rally in the city centre when police blocked his route and requested that he use an alternative road. A stand-off ensued, scuffles erupted, teargas was fired and, despite his supporters attempting to protect him, Besigye was arrested before later being released and driven back to his home in Kasangati.
