2nd Place, Story
A story about the new relationship between Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) and modern health operators.
In 2010 the government of Uganda banned TBAs from practising as midwives. However, they still operate in many rural villages. This work documents the life of 81-year-old Masa, one of the few village TBAs remaining in Bududa district, on the slopes of Mt. Elgon. She and other TBAs are now referring their patients to hospitals and clinics for safer deliveries and maternity care, and this new connection is saving the lives of mothers and newborns in this mountainous area where access to modern health services continues to be a persistent challenge.
