Creating an Image of East Africa
uganda press photo award
Jul 16, 2020
For the past couple of years there has been a lot of discussion on African representation and the need to have Africans tell African stories. With the current BLM protests it has come to bare that this is not only an African issue but a black issue as we’ve seen calls for more black photographers to be hired to report on issues that pertain to their communities.

Join us for a focus on what steps can we in East Africa can take to ensure that this resurgence goes beyond the performative winds that are currently blowing, to beyond this moment – towards more focussed and concerted efforts to engage with a varied number of voices.

Moderator:
Stella Nantongo, Programmes Coordinator at Uganda Press Photo Award

Speakers:
Maheder Tadese, Photographer and founder of Center for Photography in Ethiopia
Barbara Minishi, Photographer and Filmmaker
Jacques Nkinzingabo, Photographer and founder of Kigali Center for Photography and Kigali Photo Festival
Edward Echwalu, Documentary Photographer
